10 Christmas Ad Campaigns That Stole Our Hearts

Updated: Jan 15

The holidays are here, and that means heartwarming Christmas campaigns! Every year, brands compete to make the most touching and memorable commercials. Let's unwrap the magic of 10 ads which, according to us, captured the Christmas spirit during the festive season perfectly!

1. 'What Would Christmas Be Without Love' by Erste Group

Agency: Jung Von Matt; Production: Passion Pictures

The 2018 commercial for the Austrian bank Erste, delivers a heartwarming message through the tale of a little hedgehog. In this endearing ad, the story revolves around the hedgehog, highlighting the theme of inclusivity and acceptance. Despite the hedgehog's dangerous thorns it portrays the essence of love, emphasising that differences don't change the affection and care of those who truly love you.

This charming narrative beautifully captures the spirit of Christmas, showcasing the support and understanding of friends and family, regardless of our differences.

2. 'Christmas With Love from Mrs Claus' by M&S

Agency: RKCR/Y&R; Production: Smuggler

The M&S Christmas ad, "Christmas with Love from Mrs Claus," stands out for its unique and heartwarming portrayal of the holiday season. What sets it apart is its refreshing take on the typical Christmas narrative. Unlike many ads that focus solely on Santa or a specific gift-giving moment, this ad shines the spotlight on Mrs. Claus, an often overlooked but pivotal figure in the Christmas lore.

Mrs. Claus takes centre stage as a symbol of empathy, kindness, and the unsung hero behind the scenes. She embodies the spirit of generosity and compassion, going above and beyond to make a heartfelt difference in someone's life. Her character breaks away from the traditional depiction of Christmas as solely about Santa and showcases the profound impact of love and selflessness during the festive season.

3. 'Fuzzy Feelings' by Apple

Agency: TBWA\Media Arts Lab; Production: Hungry Man

The ad follows the journey of a young artist who uses her creative talent to visualise her perception of her boss, portraying him as a bitter figure facing misfortunes in her artwork. As she sketches scenarios where ill fate befalls him, she begins to recognize a different truth.

Through a series of encounters, the artist discovers the underlying loneliness within her boss. She comes to realise that his bitterness might stem from a lack of connection rather than inherent spite This revelation prompts a profound shift in her perspective. Instead of harbouring dislike or resentment, she empathises with his loneliness and acknowledges the potential for change through compassion and kindness.

4. 'Take Care of Yourself' by Doc Morris

Agency: Jung Von Matt; Production: Markenfilm Berlin GmbH

A beautifully written ad that reminds us of the importance of self-care and its deeper connection to family bonds. It begins with an elderly man diligently starting a weightlifting routine. As he lifts, he places a framed photograph in front of him, keeping it as a focal point throughout his exercise. The twist unfolds when the picture is revealed to be that of his granddaughter. This moment unravels the true motivation behind his dedication—the desire to stay healthy and strong for the sake of his loved one. It powerfully illustrates how our self-care isn't just about us; it's intertwined with our relationships, motivating us to be our best selves for the ones we cherish.

5. Edeka Weihnachtsclip

Agency: Jung Von Matt; Production: Tempomedia Filmproduktion

Edeka's 2015 German advertisement stands as a controversial portrayal of the loneliness felt by an elderly man during the holidays. The ad navigates the emotional terrain of an elderly gentleman who feels neglected and forgotten by his family. With the festive season unfolding and his family seemingly preoccupied, he makes a drastic decision—he fakes his own death.

The man's passing reaches his family, prompting them to gather for his funeral. Their sorrow quickly transforms into shock and eventually immense joy as the supposedly deceased man appears, revealing that this was a desperate attempt to bring his family together.

In the whirlwind of life's demands, we often find ourselves entangled in the frenzy of work, commitments, and obligations, allowing these priorities to overshadow what truly holds the most value—cherished moments with our loved ones. The relentless pursuit of success and the persistent buzz of responsibilities can blind us to the little time we have to share with those who mean the most to us.

Do you believe the ad took it too far or was its impact meaningful?

6. The Beginner by John Lewis

Agency- adam&eveDDB; Production: Biscuit Filmworks UK

John Lewis and Partners' heartwarming ad, 'The Beginner,' encapsulates the essence of determination, love, and the power of connection. The commercial follows the journey of a man who seems to have taken on the challenge of learning to ride a skateboard.

Through the ad, we witness the protagonist's persistent efforts to master the art of 'sidewalk surfing'. He falls, stumbles, and suffers multiple injuries, yet he perseveres, practising tirelessly until he finally begins to get the hang of it. The emotional payoff comes when it's revealed that his motivation wasn't personal; rather, it was for the little girl they are fostering.

7. 'Coming Home for Christmas' by Heathrow Airport

Agency: Havas; Production: Outsider, London

In an endearing and heartfelt advertisement, the warmth of family reunions takes centre stage. The ad follows the journey of two teddy bears making their way through an airport, capturing the essence of the emotional connections forged during the holiday season.

Set against the backdrop of bustling airport scenes, the ad beautifully encapsulates the anticipation and excitement of a family reunion. The teddy bears navigate their way through the terminal, evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing for the warmth of togetherness.

8. Kevin & The Christmas Factory by Aldi

Agency: McCann; Production: Wave Studios, London

Aldi UK's 2023 Christmas advertisement featuring 'Kevin the Carrot' takes a playful spin on the classic tale of 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.' In this whimsical ad, the vegetable world is brought to life in a vibrant and comical portrayal of the beloved Wonka factory.

Amidst the frenzy of desires among other vegetables in the factory, each looking for something more, Kevin the Carrot stands out as a compassionate altruist. While others are fixated on their individual wishes, Kevin embodies the true essence of Christmas—an understanding that it's not about what one can amass but rather the joy of giving. His realisation that the spirit of the season is about generosity and selflessness shines through amidst the chaotic and hilarious backdrop.

9. '1914' by Sainsbury’s

Agency: AMV BBDO; Production: Rattling Stick

A special tribute to a historic moment - the 1914 Christmas Truce during World War I. The ad shows British and German soldiers pausing the fighting to celebrate Christmas together. They exchange gifts, play football, and find peace in a moment of unity amid the chaos of war.

Sainsbury's '1914' ad goes beyond advertising, honouring a significant moment in history and reminding us of the value of peace, kindness, and humanity, especially during festive times.

10. 'Have Yourself A Merry Christmas' by Coca Cola

Agency: Wieden+Kennedy, London; Production: Hungry Man UK

Coca-Cola's 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' ad tells a moving story about a father's journey to the North Pole to deliver his daughter's letter to Santa. The commercial unfolds as the daughter hands her father the letter before he leaves for work at sea. Touched by her innocent wish, he embarks on a challenging and arduous journey to fulfil her Christmas desire.

With extreme weather and hardships along the way, the father's determination to reach the North Pole shows his commitment to making his daughter's Christmas wish come true. However, upon arrival, he discovers that Santa's house is closed for the holiday.

Disappointed, he heads back home, only to realise that his daughter's letter asked Santa to bring him back home for Christmas.

In the tapestry of Christmas magic, these campaigns weave stories of love, compassion, and the timeless spirit of giving. From the heartfelt tales of Mrs. Claus and the perseverance of 'The Beginner' to the poignant historical tribute in '1914,' each campaign paints a unique brushstroke on the canvas of holiday joy. As we unwrap the magic of these 10 ads, we're reminded that Christmas is not just a season; it's a celebration of connection, empathy, and the profound impact of shared moments. So, as we navigate the festive season, let these campaigns serve as beacons of inspiration, guiding us to embrace the true essence of Christmas—love, togetherness, and the warmth of fuzzy feelings in our hearts. Happy Holidays!
